Our Mission: The Wildlife Land Trust protects wildlife by preserving natural habitats and permanent sanctuaries. Land owners who have property that provides valuable wildlife habitat know that such lands are rapidly disappearing to development, and other exploitative uses. Refusing to sell to those who would destroy the land is an admirable, but temporary, defense against unwanted changes to the land and disruption or destruction to the wildlife it harbors. Permanent protection of both land and wildlife is possible, though, and that is what The HSUS Wildlife Land Trust enables landowners to achieve. Our Vision: The HSUS Wildlife Land Trust will: 1. Nurture innovative partnerships for habitat protection involving multiple stakeholders -- land donors, financial supporters, local constituents, volunteers and others. 2. Engage its resources as an agile, flexible, creative and responsive organization, protecting wildlife habitat through a variety of measures, including land preservation agreements and wildlife management agreements with other organizations. 3. Join with individuals, agencies, organizations and working farms and ranches to preserve and restore our natural areas, forests, vistas, rivers and streams for the benefit of wildlife. 4. Influence public policy through habitat protection. 5. Embrace a new and enlarged constituency that supports WLT work through memberships and philanthropy. 6. Raise WLT's profile using diverse projects and initiatives that showcase concrete accomplishments. 7. Be the lead organization within the land trust and conservation community - the primary organization to which landowners and others turn - for multi-species wildlife habitat protection. Our Principles: In furtherance of its mission, The Wildlife Land Trust shall observe the following principles: 1. We work in partnership with The Humane Society of the United States and other organizations to create a world in which animals are respected for their intrinsic value and humane solutions are sought to human-wildlife conflicts. 2. We create Shelters Without WallsTM that are models of wildlife habitat protection. 3. Our work is domestic and international with projects small and large. 4. Recreational and commercial hunting and trapping are not permitted on properties protected by the Wildlife Land Trust. 5. Our lands are subject to the highest standards of professional wildlife and habitat protection. 6. Our function is protective, possessive and convening; we encourage others to assume stewardship responsibilities. 7. Our interests encompass habitat for all wildlife: large, small, endangered and common. 8. We work to improve the ability of wildlife to thrive on WLT properties.
