The Humane Society Wildlife Land Trust is deeply grateful to those who have donated
land or conservation easements on their land, so that we may ensure its
permanent protection. Their generosity, foresight, and compassion for
wildlife will make all the difference for countless creatures, now and
forever.

Dave and Barbara Birdsey
Barbara Birdsey helped establish the Wildlife Land Trust by being among the first to donate sanctuary property. She has since donated multiple properties to WLT and now serves on WLT's Board of Directors. Here’s an excerpt of her remarks on the occasion of the WLT’s tenth anniversary.
"I remember so well talking with John Grandy [Senior Vice President, Wildlife] and others at the HSUS about the idea of forming a land trust dedicated to the protection of special places and habitats, so that the animals residing there could live their lives in peace and safety. This was to be not unlike the Orenda Wildlife Land Trust that I had established in the northeast, but on a much larger and more inclusive scale.
I have also had the pleasure of getting to know the staff members of the Trust, who help to implement the vision. They are professional and friendly to work with, keeping the humane ideals that have been established for the Trust moving ever forward. I have no doubt that there will be many, many more protected places for wildlife and that many landowners will find peace of mind with the help of The HSUS Wildlife Land Trust, knowing that a place they love will forever he the way they have known it."
The following words from a few of our donors provide a sense of the caring
and commitment that typify those who have protected their land through
The Wildlife Land Trust...
"I looked at all kinds of land trusts and chose the Wildlife Land Trust because I felt they would protect habitat and the wildlife that I love in a way no one else would."

We did not want our land to be sold and probably cut up
into smaller parcels and/or developed in any way. We began our search
for an acceptable solution, but most of the organizations we had heard
of were not going to provide the protection features we desired...
When I see how swiftly land is being lost to housing developments
and shopping malls, I feel it is my obligation and privilege to try
to preserve this property as it is now. So many forests are being damaged
and destroyed, leaving little or no escape for wildlife. They lived
here before we did and deserve the courtesy of being protected. I can
see only good coming from the Trust's permanent protection of this land
and the wildlife on it.

I could never justify allowing our land to
be torn apart, and I began to realize that we would need to find an
organization to help us ensure that our land and the wildlife we have
come to love would always be protected. I have been a member of The
Humane Society of the United States since the late 1960s, so I was delighted
to learn that The HSUS had created a land trust for the specific purpose
of protecting wildlife habitat...
The Trust's staff quickly responded, helping
us establish a conservation easement on our land that fulfills our protective
vision for its future.

Our corner of the world may seem of small
significance to those focused on the vast problems of diminishing rainforest,
endangered species, and rampant pollution, but if we are to preserve
our planet, it seems that each of us must act responsibly toward this
end, whether we own a modest-sized plot or a 1,000-acre tract.

This place is so special to me, I wanted to
be certain that it would be preserved in its natural state in times
to come, not chopped up into housing subdivisions. I rest much easier
now, knowing that the wildlife here will always be safe from human predation
and from commercial exploitation.
