Frequently Asked Questions

How many acres does a property have to be in order to be considered for protection?

Rather than set a specific minimum number of acres for sanctuaries, we consider multiple aspects of each property in determining whether it is appropriate as a permanent sanctuary. In some cases, smaller properties, particularly in suburban areas, may, in fact, be very important to protect, because they may represent the last refuge for wildlife displaced by nearby development, or they may serve as important linkages between other undeveloped lands. Generally, a property's natural features, such as natural water resources and vegetation, its overall condition, and the circumstances of lands surrounding it are more important in determining its suitability for protection than size considerations.

Do there have to be threatened or endangered species living on the property for it to be considered for protection as a sanctuary?

No. The Trust was specifically established in 1993 to protect the homes of all species of wildlife, not just those that are already endangered, threatened, or rare.

How does The Wildlife Land Trust oversee the lands under its protection?

In addition to yearly property reviews conducted by the Trust's professional staff or our expert consultants, properties are monitored periodically throughout the year by specially trained volunteer sanctuary monitors. These dedicated individuals oversee properties assigned to them and report any concerns that arise to our staff for follow-up.
