 
The McClure Wildlife Sanctuary was established in 2004 through the testamentary gift of the property by Miss Patricia McClure to the Humane Society Wildlife Land Trust. Her foresight and generosity has ensured that the animals who lived there will have homes for generations to come. Years before she had contacted the HSWLT asking how she might “create a safe haven for wildlife, free from hunters, free from development and free from trespassers.” By having her property approved as a wildlife sanctuary before her death, Miss McClure was able to ensure that HSWLT understood her wishes and she avoided any delays in transferring the property from her estate. This sanctuary, like all properties owned by HSWLT, will be held forever for the benefit of wildlife with all commercial and recreational hunting trapping prohibited as well as destructive logging practices and development. Located in Colden, New York, the sanctuary comprises two parcels of land totaling 150 acres. Open space is surrounded by wooded areas of pines and native hardwoods. A creek provides vital water for free-roaming animals year around. Among the many animals that call the McClure Wildlife Sanctuary home are white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and foxes. Canada geese spend part of the year here, and the woods provide food and shelter for many species of birds, including warblers, wrens, and woodpeckers. The Humane Society Wildlife Land Trust holds the title to this sanctuary. That means HSWLT is responsible for all property taxes and maintenance costs for the property -- every year, forever. In addition periodic inspections are made to ensure that the wildlife habitat remains in good condition. These inspections, and the handling of any damage or destruction, cost heavily in professional staff time and travel expenses. HSWLT has promised to keep this property as a sanctuary forever -- and that promise will be kept.
