A resort village in the Adirondacks, Lake Clear has only several hundred residents at present, but its beauty leaves its future tranquility in question. Anna Lisa Russell’s 6.7-acre property attracts myriad bird species, and the marsh and wooded areas are home to many small mammals, turtles, frogs, toads, and other creatures. While the Trust will, of course, keep its promise to forever protect this property, WLT has, unfortunately, found that it cannot afford to take on the permanent protection obligations for any more properties of this size. The expenses of stewardship have made such donations too costly to maintain. The Humane Society Wildlife Land Trust holds the title to this sanctuary. That means the Wildlife Land Trust is responsible for all property taxes and maintenance costs for the property -- every year, forever. In addition periodic inspections are made to ensure that the wildlife habitat remains in good condition. These inspections, and the handling of any damage or destruction, cost heavily in professional staff time and travel expenses. WLT has promised to keep this property as a sanctuary forever -- and that promise will be kept. If you can help with the cost of stewardship for this and the other properties WLT protects, please donate here. |
