This hilly, unspoiled 40-acre property in Crystal Falls, Michigan, is surrounded by forests. The property is about half forest itself, including red pine, white pine, aspen, and birch, and one half meadow and farmland. These habitat features, along with a pond that the owner established, make the sanctuary an ideal home for deer, American black bears, moose, wolves, coyotes, badgers, cougars, fishers, foxes, eagles, geese, ducks, and countless bird species.

The many years that Carroll Lysinger has owned, nurtured, and enjoyed this land and its creatures led him to seek out the assistance of the Humane Society Wildlife Land Trust to provide permanent protection for his beloved wilderness retreat. Now a conservation easement ensures that the sanctuary will remain forever a safe haven for the creatures dependent upon it.

Although this sanctuary remains privately owned, the Humane Society Wildlife Land Trust has an obligation to perform periodic inspections to ensure that the wildlife habitat remains in good condition and that the terms of the conservation easements are being met.  These inspections, and the handling of any destruction or violations, cost heavily in professional staff time, consultants, and travel expenses. In addition HSWLT needs a reserve of funds for the substantial legal fees needed if enforcement of violations involves court action.

HSWLT has promised to protect this property as sanctuary forever -- and that promise will be kept.  If you can help with the cost of stewardship for this and the other properties HSWLT protects, please donate here.
