Braila, RomaniaTogether with EarthVoice-Romania, the Humane Society Wildlife Land Trust protects the 52,076-acre Small Island of Braila, an irreplaceable wetland wildlife habitat in the Lower Danube flood plain. This historic agreement ensures that the island will remain free from recreational and commercial hunting and trapping, deforestation, and development. The marshes, cattail swamps, grasslands, and forests of the Small Island of Braila are home to 34 species of birds that are protected at the international level through the Berne Convention. The wetland is an important ornithological halfway point between the breeding sites of northern Europe and winter refuges of Africa. Over 300 different species of birds have been identified on the island, including the threatened red-breasted goose, breeding colonies of pygmy cormorants, bitterns, loons, red-crested grebes, white pelicans, red herons, little egrets, night herons, black storks, spoonbills, mute swans, and white-tailed eagles. In order to expand the scope of Wildlife Land Trust’s influence and effectiveness for the benefit of wildlife, WLT frequently shares funds, expertise and our humane philosophy with other organizations. All WLT partnerships are rooted in our commitment to providing wildlife with safe places to live, forever, by assisting other organizations that share our concerns for wildlife and habitat.
