Ken and Mary Able looked long and hard for the perfect place to retire: a wide open landscape where they could do their part to permanently protect the habitat of animals large and small. The Ables found their dream on rangeland in the Fall River Valley of northern California, on a 400-acre mix of woodlands, rocky outcrops, grassy meadows, and ponds and streams.
This diverse habitat is home to countless birds, from golden and bald eagles to sandhill cranes and woodpeckers, as well as antelopes, mule deer, coyotes, bobcats, cougars, marmots, gray foxes, and river otters. Because the property is bordered on three sides by land under permanent protection by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the placement of an easement on it in 2006 through the Wildlife Land Trust created an even larger, more connected habitat area.
