The Tillie Arsenio Wildlife Sanctuary was established in 1998 when Sherman Arsenio donated a conservation easement to the Humane Society Wildlife Land Trust.  Mr. Arsenio chose to dedicate this sanctuary to his wife, Tillie.  For many years, they camped here and enjoyed the magnificent beauty of northern California and the wildlife native to the area.

In selecting the Wildlife Land Trust, Arsenio protected not only the land but also the wild animals who need a safe place to live. As with all conservation easements held by the Wildlife Land Trust, the Arsenio agreement permanently prohibits all recreational and commercial hunting and trapping on the property, as well as destructive logging practices and development.

This 495-acre property in high desert country includes 70 acres of pine forest.  The varied landscape provides homes for many types of free-roaming animals including geese, cranes, deer, coyotes, quail, and pronghorn antelopes.

Although this sanctuary remains privately owned, the Humane Society Wildlife Land Trust has an obligation to perform periodic inspections to ensure that the wildlife habitat remains in good condition and that the terms of the conservation easements are being met.  These inspections, and the handling of any destruction or violations, cost heavily in professional staff time, consultants, and travel expenses. In addition HSWLT needs a reserve of funds for the substantial legal fees needed if enforcement of violations involves court action.
